SUMMARY:Astronaut Memorial Ceremony - 2019
DESCRIPTION:During the Astronaut Memorial Ceremony\, the Florida Space Coast reverently honors the 17 astronauts lost in three NASA tragedies. The ceremony takes place on Saturday\, January 26 at 11 AM\, at Sand Point Park in Titusville\, Florida. (Map & contacts are below.) \nThe space community marks this special ceremony as the focus for paying our respect to the sacrifice made by the crews of Apollo 1\, Challenger STS-51L\, and Columbia STS-107 in a beautiful and humble observance to include a Patriotic theme\, the placement of a memorial wreath at the American Flag monument and individual flowers on the late astronaut’s plaque\, a 21-gun Salute\, and Taps. \nAn astronaut as well as dignitaries from the City of Titusville and other organizations will offer remarks on the men and women who lost their lives pushing the envelope of the space frontier that is so much a part of the lives of the small towns and cities surrounding Kennedy Space Center. \nThe event is open to the public and sponsored in part by the City of Titusville Flag & Memorial Committee and the American Space Museum. Other important supporters include the Knights of Columbus\, the Civil Air Patrol\, Titusville Garden Club\, and the employees of the City of Titusville and Brevard County. \nThe three NASA tragedies are not a pleasant memory to revisit\, but the loss has always made NASA and its contractors across America rise above the malaise and become stronger and safer. We will never forget these brave spacefarers who lost their lives doing what they loved in efforts to advance our civilization… \nApollo 1\, Jan. 27\, 1967: Commander Virgil “Gus” Grissom a Mercury and Gemini veteran\, Ed White\, the first American to walk in space\, and Roger Chaffee; \nChallenger STS-51L\, Jan. 28\, 1986: Commander Dick Scobee\, Pilot Mike Smith\, Mission specialists Judy Resnick\, Ellison Onizuka\, Greg Jarvis\, Ron McNair and first true civilian and teacher in space Christa McAuliffe; \nColumbia STS-107\, Feb. 1\, 2003: Commander Rick Husband\, Pilot Willie McCool\, Mission specialists Michael Anderson\, Kalpana Chawala\, David Brown\, Laurel Clark and Israel’s first astronaut Ilan Ramon. \nNote: The American Space Museum\, 308 Pine Street on southbound US 1\, will be open with free admission on this memorial Saturday.

SUMMARY:Yuri's Night Celebrating 1st Manned Spaceflight - Featured speaker Shuttle Launch Director Bob Sieck
DESCRIPTION:Family-friendly event FREE to the public… \nCelebrate the first man in space on Yuri’s Night April 12 from 7-9 pm with featured speaker Bob Sieck\, former NASA space shuttle launch director\, at American Space Museum\, Titusville\, FL. (See below for address\, map and contact.) \nSieck\, launch director for 52 Shuttle launches and former program director\, will share his insight to the dangerous first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia that occurred 20 years to the date after Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic single orbit of Earth on April 12\, 1961. \nThe 57th anniversary of man entering outer space will also feature an attempt to make radio contact with a passing satellite by Dave Jordan of the Amateur Radio Satellite Organization (AMSAT). And Ozzie Osband of the museum will talk about upcoming launches on the Space Coast. \nYuri’s Night is celebrated world-wide when on April 12\, 1961 Gagarin blasted off Earth and flew in his Vostok 1 spacecraft for one orbit of the Earth and into immortality. He died in 1968 in a jet crash while training for a Soviet moon landing. \nThe date coincides with NASA’s launch of the first Space Shuttle Columbia\, STS-1\, in 1981\, with astronauts John Young\, former moonwalker\, and Bob Crippen\, rookie\, aboard. It has been called the world’s most dangerous manned test flight of any air or spacecraft. \nBob Sieck was the NASA chief shuttle project engineer when the unflown “Space Transportation System” was launched with Columbia on its maiden voyage. Sieck’s illustrious career with NASA began in 1964 as a Gemini spacecraft system engineer. He is honored with many awards from his peers and has great insight into the workings of the American space program.

SUMMARY:“Bringing Columbia Home” Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Former Space Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach and space historian Jonathan Ward will be signing copies of their new book\, “Bringing Columbia Home: The Untold Story of a Lost Space Shuttle and Her Crew” at the American Space Museum beginning at 11:00 on Saturday\, January 27. \nComing out at the 15th anniversary of the Columbia space shuttle disaster\, this is the epic true story of one of the most dramatic\, unforgettable adventures of our time. \nFor the first time\, here is the definitive inside story of the Columbia disaster and recovery and the inspiring message it ultimately holds. In the aftermath of tragedy\, people and communities came together to help bring home the remains of the crew and nearly 40 percent of shuttle\, an effort that was instrumental in piecing together what happened so the shuttle program could return to flight and complete the International Space Station. Bringing Columbia Home shares the deeply personal stories that emerged as NASA employees looked for lost colleagues and searchers overcame immense physical\, logistical\, and emotional challenges and worked together to accomplish the impossible. \nFeaturing a foreword and epilogue by astronauts Robert Crippen and Eileen Collins\, and dedicated to the astronauts and recovery search persons who lost their lives\, this is an incredible\, compelling narrative about the best of humanity in the darkest of times and about how a failure at the pinnacle of human achievement became a story of cooperation and hope.
