DESCRIPTION:Two legends of the Apollo space program\, astronauts Jack Lousma and Rusty Schweickart\, will hold an autograph and photo session Thursday Nov. 16 from 11am to noon at the American Space Museum\, Downtown Titusville\, FL\, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Skylab\, America’s first space station. (Must be in line by 11:45am.) Map at Page Bottom. \nSchweickart flew on the Apollo 9 earth-orbiting mission in March 1969\, testing the moon ships with two other astronauts. In 1973 he was the backup commander for Skylab. Lousma spent 56 days on Skylab in 1973. Lousma also was commander of the third Space Shuttle flight\, STS-3. Lousma and Schweickart are in their late 80s\, and it is increasingly challenging to see them in person. \nThe 11am autograph event at our museum is to promote the documentary “Searching for Skylab: America’s Forgotten Triumph” and its 3 pm screening and panel discussion in the IMAX theater at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. DESCRIPTION:We welcome International Space Station astronaut and professed “earthling” Nicole Passonno Stott for a book signing on Saturday\, Nov. 18 from 1-3pm at our Titusville\, FL museum. \nShe will sign her new book “Back to Earth: What Life in Space Taught Me About Our Home Planet—And Our Mission to Protect It.” The October 2021 book reads like a seven-chapter lesson plan to save and care for our “spaceship” Earth. \nThe book is available for purchase at the museum for $30. \nCOST\, Map & Contact At Page Bottom\nNicole’s experiences include 104 days in space as a NASA astronaut on the International Space Station Expeditions 20/21 and the STS-133 final mission of Orbiter Discovery in 2010. DESCRIPTION:The late Robert “Ozzie” Osband\, self-proclaimed “Rocket Hobo” and “Father of the 3-2-1 Area Code” will be honored at a celebration in Downtown Titusville\, Florida on March 21\, 2024. The event begins at Space View Park and ends with a block party at the Titusville Welcome Center. \nCo-Organized by the American Space Museum and the National Space Society\, the celebration of Ozzie’s life and impact as an influencer in many organizations is “go for launch.” With support from the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce\, we hope to create an annual “3-2-1 Day” that will honor the space community as well as kick off the Spring Equinox and tourism in the region. \nAgenda\n3:21pm Gathering: The celebration of Ozzie’s life will begin with an informal gathering of friends at 3:21pm at Space View Park\, where Ozzie’s lawn chair and famous green polo shirt will be placed for final respects. (The park is where he sold his ”Rocket Hobo” patches and touched thousands of people with launch updates\, countdowns\, and the occasional\, “SCRUB!”) \n4:00pm Live Broadcast: At 4pm\, a special episode of the “Stay Curious” video podcast honoring Ozzie will be broadcast live on YouTube from Space View Park. Docents from the Museums of Brevard will have the remaining “Rocket Hobo” cloth patches available for donations made payable to the “American Space Museum“. \nMove To Block Party at Welcome Center: Once mourners have paid their respects at the Park\, they are invited to follow museum docents to the Titusville Welcome Center\, where at 5pm Mayor Dan Diesel will read a proclamation in honor of Titusville’s most iconic character and inaugurate the best block party in the galaxy\, Florida’s Space Coast homegrown holiday 3-2-1 Day “Tomorrow launches here!” \nThere will be food trucks and adult beverages for sale as well as exhibitors representing many of the causes for which Ozzie volunteered. There will be a performance by Interstellar Groove Machine\, a local Space Coast band composed of aerospace employees. \nHow Ozzie brought the 3-2-1 Area Code to Brevard County\nIn 1998\, Orlando was overloading the Space Coast “407” telephone area code. Ozzie researched that “321” was available\, and thought it appropriate for the area where rocket launches end in 3-2-1. Other areas wanted it but Ozzie single-handedly campaigned a year through the proper government hurdles to install “321” on the Space Coast and leave “407” with Orlando. On Nov. 1\, 1999\, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush placed the first official “321” phone call from Tallahassee to Kennedy Space Center\, with Ozzie sitting beside the deputy director receiving the call. \nTestimonials\n“We are excited to honor our wonderful friend Ozzie in this celebration\,” said Karan Conklin\, ASM executive director. “We are happy the National Space Society has helped our museum create a community event to honor Ozzie’s legacy on our Space Coast.” \n“People like Robert Osband carry the torch for the Space Age in the community and help inspire all generations to explore outer space\,” said Gabriel Rothblatt\, a Director of the National Space Society and Space Coast resident. “This is a special celebration for an extraordinary man\, and we welcome the community to join us.” \nMore About Ozzie\nOzzie Osband died Aug. 6\, 2023 of natural causes at age 72. He was born in New York\, and lived much of his life in the Titusville area. He had his own computer software company and was well known in the Amateur “ham” Radio community with call N4SCY. A 20-year volunteer for the museum\, he was webmaster for the 20-plus Museums of Brevard and active in the Democratic Party. As an Army veteran\, Ozzie was interred at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims\, Florida. \nAbout the American Space Museum\nThe non-profit U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation works to preserve the history of the U.S. Space program through our American Space Museum exhibits and educational programs\, a daily video podcast “Stay Curious” as well as the Space View Park Monuments dedicated to the space programs workers and astronauts. See you next year! \n\nThe American Space Museum will host ShuttleFest III\, our third annual celebration of the Space Shuttle Era on Saturday\, April 13\, 2024 8am – 4pm at Hyatt Place Titusville/Kennedy Space Center. The PUBLIC is INVITED to this annual event. \nWith the theme\, “More than Just Astronomy Missions\,” the event will feature space workers (and possibly astronauts) who participated in the STS-35 & 67 Astro 1 & 2\, the STS-41 Ulysses (Sun orbit) and the STS-34 Galileo (Jupiter orbit) missions. These astronomy missions had some drama involved… Ulysses and Galileo had controversial radioactive power sources and were to be launched from the Shuttle payload bay by a liquid fueled Centaur rocket. The Astro 1 mission was almost terminated in orbit because of a communications problem with the telescopes that was solved in a unique way. \nIn the works is a possible book signing opportunity\, and select vendors\, including the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and Ken Havekotte Memorabilia. The ShuttleFest “shield” artwork is provided by Tim Gagnon. \nShuttleFest III will include panel discussions such as “Art in Space” headed by world-renowned artist Chris Calle. A “Look to the Future” panel will end the event with key members of private companies and NASA. \nCost: Donations Accepted\nWe are not charging admission but would suggest a donation of $20 (or $10 for museum members). DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 2/4/2025: The video of the ceremony is now online HERE on American Space Museum’s YouTube channel. \n\nThe annual public Astronaut Memorial Ceremony for the 17 crew members of Apollo 1\, Challenger and Columbia who perished in America’s space program will be on Sunday Jan. 26\, 2025 at 1 pm\, at Sand Point Park in Titusville\, FL. \nShuttle astronaut Andy Allen\, who twice flew Columbia\, will be the keynote speaker.* The public is invited to attend this reverent and patriotic ceremony that honors the lives and sacrifice made by these pioneers of NASA’s manned space program. (Map & contacts are below.) \nAmerican Space Museum’s YouTube channel will carry this ceremony for later playback. \nThe ceremony includes a keynote address\, patriotic songs\, a host of city and county dignitaries\, cadets of the Civil Air Patrol\, a 21-gun salute and placement of flowers on the 17 plaques at the park honoring the fallen space travelers. \nThe annual remembrance is hosted by the City of Titusville Flag & Memorial Committee and the American Space Museum. Husband\, William C. “Willie” McCool\, David M. Brown\, Laurel Clark\, Kalpana Chawla\, Michael Anderson and Ilan Ramon. \n* Keynote speaker\, astronaut Andy Allen\, is from Richboro\, Pennsylvania and has 38 days in Earth orbit as Space Shuttle pilot or commander on three missions in the 1990s. Allen received his commission in the United States Marine Corps at Villanova University in 1977\, and became a Top Gun aviator. SUMMARY:Bilingual STEAM Educational Workshop – Feb 1\, 2025 - “Animals in Space"
DESCRIPTION:The American Space Museum presents our FREE educational “Bilingual STEAM* Program” for kids ages 4 – 12 on the first Saturday of each month. The class is free but limited to 15 students. Pre-registration Required. See below.** It will not only teach Space Age concepts\, but employ the Spanish language to the vocabulary of the students in the educational materials. You do NOT need to know Spanish to attend. Students will learn new phrases and terms along with science education. Address and map to our Titusville\, Florida location are at page bottom. \nNatalia Sepúlveda conducts the monthly 10:30 am to noon class with the following themes for 2025… \n\nJan 11th: “Seeing Venus\, Saturn\, Jupiter and Mars from your Backyard!”\nFeb 1: “Animals in Space”\nMarch 1: “Women in Space Month” (Focusing on female engineers)\nRest of 2025: (To be announced.)\n\nOur STEM Calendar will list TOPICS and DATES as they become available for registration.\nSepúlveda is a bilingual educator\, best-selling children’s book author\, translator\, and editor. She’s a Ronald McNair Fellow (Challenger astronaut) with a master’s degree in Spanish from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.  \nShe owns Bilingual Lifestyle Publishing and teaches Spanish in her Bilingual Playgroup at the Brevard County libraries. She has translated and edited over 450 children’s books and educational resources. She also runs a Bilingual Lifestyle blog\, sharing her bilingual family adventures and educational resources. \nNatalia is originally from San Germán\, Puerto Rico\, and lives on the Florida Space Coast with her husband\, Joseph\, and her 3 children.
