SUMMARY:International Observe the Moon Day / Night - 2019
DESCRIPTION:International Observe the Moon Night  is a worldwide celebration of lunar science and exploration\, celestial observation\, and our cultural and personal connections to the Moon. The American Space Museum will be celebrating all day as well as in the evening. \nOne day each year\, everyone on Earth is invited to observe\, learn about\, and celebrate the Moon together. This event occurs in September or October\, when the Moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing. Furthermore\, the best lunar observing is typically along the Moon’s terminator (the line between night and day) where shadows are the longest\, rather than at full Moon. \nNote:  7 – 10 pm Observe the Moon Night  is FREE. Earlier daytime events require museum admission. (Adults $10\, Sr. & military $8\, Kids 13-18 $5\, 12 & under free. Thank you for supporting our non-profit museum.) \nMoon Day Schedule…\n\n10 am – Museum Opens. All day activities for Kids include: Straw rockets to the Moon; coloring & drawing; making Moon craters & more!\n11 am – NASA Solar System Ambassador report on Artemis Moon project & Cosmic Chef MarQ makes a comet!\nNoon – Apollo 11 celebration Tang Toast during 50th landing documentary\,\n1-3 pm – Moon Fact and Moon Lore in Education Room. Docents will share facts about the Moon and the Apollo program all afternoon during impromptu talks. Also a chance to share your own memories of the Moon Race. Kids can do Moon science\, too!\n3-5 pm – The “411” on Telescopes: Amateur astronomers talk about how to use the telescopes you may own (and under the bed!). Learn how to be a stargazer without a telescope as the Brevard Astronomical Society members arrive to set up for the night’s “Moon Gaze.”\n5 pm – Museum Closes.\n\nMoon Night Schedule…\n\n7-10 pm – FREE Observe the Moon Night. Telescopes will be set up in the back parking lot of the American Space Museum. Amateur astronomers from Brevard Astronomical Society will be on hand to show you the Universe! SUMMARY:Yuri's Night Celebrating 1st Manned Spaceflight - Featured speaker Shuttle Launch Director Bob Sieck
DESCRIPTION:Family-friendly event FREE to the public… \nCelebrate the first man in space on Yuri’s Night April 12 from 7-9 pm with featured speaker Bob Sieck\, former NASA space shuttle launch director\, at American Space Museum\, Titusville\, FL. (See below for address\, map and contact.) \nSieck\, launch director for 52 Shuttle launches and former program director\, will share his insight to the dangerous first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia that occurred 20 years to the date after Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic single orbit of Earth on April 12\, 1961. \nThe 57th anniversary of man entering outer space will also feature an attempt to make radio contact with a passing satellite by Dave Jordan of the Amateur Radio Satellite Organization (AMSAT). And Ozzie Osband of the museum will talk about upcoming launches on the Space Coast. \nYuri’s Night is celebrated world-wide when on April 12\, 1961 Gagarin blasted off Earth and flew in his Vostok 1 spacecraft for one orbit of the Earth and into immortality. He died in 1968 in a jet crash while training for a Soviet moon landing. \nThe date coincides with NASA’s launch of the first Space Shuttle Columbia\, STS-1\, in 1981\, with astronauts John Young\, former moonwalker\, and Bob Crippen\, rookie\, aboard. It has been called the world’s most dangerous manned test flight of any air or spacecraft. \nBob Sieck was the NASA chief shuttle project engineer when the unflown “Space Transportation System” was launched with Columbia on its maiden voyage. Sieck’s illustrious career with NASA began in 1964 as a Gemini spacecraft system engineer. He is honored with many awards from his peers and has great insight into the workings of the American space program.
