DESCRIPTION:Our FREE “Smithsonian Museum Day” of exciting events. Visit with a real astronaut\, touch space history\, enjoy the thrill of a virtual reality roller coaster\, and see Mars and Saturn through a telescope. \nWe will host a meet-and-greet with astronaut Mike McCulley\, the pilot of STS-34\, which deployed the Galileo spacecraft to Jupiter from the Shuttle cargo bay. He later became president and CEO of United Space Alliance\, the contractor that launched the Shuttles. \nThroughout the day…\n– Young and old can enjoy the Rilix virtual reality roller coaster simulators. ** \n– ASM is pleased to welcome NASA’s Solar System Ambassador\, Tyler Hines\, who will be talking about NASA’s plan for the exploration of Mars. \n– The Smithsonian Museum Day across American focuses on “Women Who Made History”\, and ASM will have a special exhibit “Women of Space” for the occasion. \n– Docent led tours of the museum will highlight the artifacts in the museum’s collection. These include actual interactive Shuttle Launch Consoles\, hardware from the blockhouse at Pad 36A that launched hundreds of Atlas-Centaur rockets\, items from the Mercury\, Gemini and Apollo programs\, rare spacecraft models and lots more in our galleries dedicated to NASA’s manned space program and the contractors who made the space program a reality. \n– Kids of all ages will enjoy watching a “comet” created before their eyes by Mark Marquette\, who heads up our astronomy program. \nEvening Program… \nAn Urban Stargazing event in the ASM parking lot will begin at 7 pm\, with the Moon\, and three planets visible through telescopes of various sizes. Bring the family and see the moons of Jupiter\, rings of Saturn and surface of Mars! \n** We will have two Rilix Virtual Reality Roller Coaster systems for “rides” throughout the day. Here’s what they look like… \n1) See the view as if you are riding the coaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgHVRQBO9pQ \n2) Watch two guys riding the Rilix VR coaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Soxoi-tmSt4 \nNote: Click the X on lower right to close the video window when done watching.

SUMMARY:Yuri's Night Celebrating 1st Manned Spaceflight - Featured speaker Shuttle Launch Director Bob Sieck
DESCRIPTION:Family-friendly event FREE to the public… \nCelebrate the first man in space on Yuri’s Night April 12 from 7-9 pm with featured speaker Bob Sieck\, former NASA space shuttle launch director\, at American Space Museum\, Titusville\, FL. (See below for address\, map and contact.) \nSieck\, launch director for 52 Shuttle launches and former program director\, will share his insight to the dangerous first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia that occurred 20 years to the date after Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic single orbit of Earth on April 12\, 1961. \nThe 57th anniversary of man entering outer space will also feature an attempt to make radio contact with a passing satellite by Dave Jordan of the Amateur Radio Satellite Organization (AMSAT). And Ozzie Osband of the museum will talk about upcoming launches on the Space Coast. \nYuri’s Night is celebrated world-wide when on April 12\, 1961 Gagarin blasted off Earth and flew in his Vostok 1 spacecraft for one orbit of the Earth and into immortality. He died in 1968 in a jet crash while training for a Soviet moon landing. \nThe date coincides with NASA’s launch of the first Space Shuttle Columbia\, STS-1\, in 1981\, with astronauts John Young\, former moonwalker\, and Bob Crippen\, rookie\, aboard. It has been called the world’s most dangerous manned test flight of any air or spacecraft. \nBob Sieck was the NASA chief shuttle project engineer when the unflown “Space Transportation System” was launched with Columbia on its maiden voyage. Sieck’s illustrious career with NASA began in 1964 as a Gemini spacecraft system engineer. He is honored with many awards from his peers and has great insight into the workings of the American space program.
