CANCELED (COVID-19): Celebration Series 2020 – “Women Space Pioneers”

March 21, 2020 @ 10:00 am EDT

CANCELED (COVID-19): Update: The March 21st Event has been CANCELED…

With regret, but in the spirit of being responsible during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic health emergency, the “Women Space Pioneers” event March 21st has been canceled. “We are doing the responsible thing for the public health, as so many places are,” said Executive Director Karan Conklin. “We are grateful for our amazing cast of guest speakers willing to support our Celebration Series of talks, and hope we can bring them back for the same event in March 2021.”

Celebration Series Women Space Pioneers Logo
An amazing look at females who made a difference in the Space Age, with fun activities for the entire family.

The program will feature…

  • NASA legend JoAnn Morgan, the woman who broke the “glass ceiling” for lady engineers in the 1960s. She will talk of her pioneering experiences as the only female among the male rocket engineers in the Kennedy Space Center Launch Control at the historic launch of Apollo 11 in July 1969.
  • Al Hallonquist, the authority on the 1960s First Lady Astronaut Trainees (FLATS).
  • Jean Wright, retired NASA engineer and one of 18 women “Sew Sisters” who sewed protective reentry blankets covering the Shuttle Orbiters.
  • Emily Carney, blog writer and founder of Facebook’s Space Hipsters, 18,000 followers strong after 9 years;
  • Suzy Cunningham, Kennedy Space Center’s Strategy & Integration Manager, with a 30 year NASA career.
  • Rebecca Siegel, author of the book “To Fly Among the Stars: A True Story of the Women and Men who tested to become America’s First Astronauts”. She has written nonfiction history books for Middle Grade and Young Adult readers for the past 14 years.
  • 97 year old Ike Rigel, legendary NASA launch director and World War II veteran, will be available in the morning to sign his autobiography, “Ike”.
  • Former space workers will be on hand to explain the artifacts and share their personal stories.

11 am to 4 pm…

During two panel discussions, the speakers will share their experiences writing about women space pioneers and their place in space history. The morning panel will be the space writers Hallonquist, Carney and Siegel. The afternoon panel will feature Ms. Morgan, Wright and Cunningham.

4 pm to 9 pm…

The event will continue as a Space Hipsters Spring Equinox meet-up, featuring a 7 pm panel discussion with several Space Coast rocket launch photographers sharing their techniques. An Urban Stargaze from the parking lot, will be conducted by the Brevard Astronomical Society until 9 pm.

This ASM event for National Women’s Month is in partnership with the Titusville Women’s Center.

Cost: Normal Admission.   (Evening Stargazing: Free)

The “American Space Museum Celebration Series 2020” will connect the public with space workers and authorities on monthly subjects.
