Dan McKune, VAB Crane Operator: ASM Interview on YouTube

To watch on YouTube, visit our Space Worker Oral Histories and look for Dan McKune.

On Sept 15th, 2020 American Space Museum interviewed VAB Crane Operator and 24 Year Space Program Veteran Dan McKune. Dan tells stories about “stacking” the Space Shuttle’s three main parts in the 526 foot tall Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center. He describes the precision required of the crane operators. Imagine having to pass a test by writing your name on a piece of paper using a Magic Marker attached to the hook of a 250 ton rated crane! The hook is over 400 feet below your control cab! They could also touch the top of an egg without breaking it.

Moderated by Mark Marquette, this interview is part of our museum’s “Stay Curious” series and our “Space Worker Oral Histories” project.

Dan worked for NASA contractors for 24 years…
1986 – 1994: Crane, Door and Platform Mechanical Technician
1995 – 2010: Launch Equipment Shop “LES Shop”
Currently: Dan is retired and volunteers as the American Space Museum Facilities Manager.
